action
One night, the little boy David notices how a UFO lands behind a hill near his parents' house. He speaks to his parents about it, but they do not want to believe him. The next day, his father is outwardly unchanged, but strangely emotionless. A short time later, David's mother and other residents of the small town are also changed. They have been injected with a device in the form of a small spike that is used to control them by the aliens who landed with the UFO. David confides in Mrs. Magnusson to the school nurse, one of the few who has not yet been manipulated. Even his teacher, Mrs. McKeltch, has already been changed and, like David's parents, tries repeatedly to get hold of him.
With the help of the military, David finally manages to storm and destroy the underground base that the aliens have built. He can also save the psychologist Mrs. Magnusson, who has been caught in the meantime, while his teacher Mrs. McKeltch is eaten alive by the aliens. The already injected spines will be ineffective by the destruction of the command base and people will be back to normal.
Trivia
- Karen Black and Hunter Carson are mom and son in real life.
- The school in the film was named after William Cameron Menzies, the director of the original film.
- Jimmy Hunt, the boy from the original film, plays the police chief.
- In the basement of the school, where Linda and David want to hide from the police controlled by the aliens, a replica of the boss alien from the original 1953 film can be seen between various stored objects (figure with tentacles in a glass ball).
- Noticeable towards the end of the film is the rapid cut from the exploding spaceship straight to the end credits of the film: As in the original version from 1953, the last storyline has been removed from the German version. In this, the entire plot of the film is described as David's nightmare, who is comforted by his parents after waking up in fright and then sees how the spaceship of the aliens from his dream actually lands behind the hill.
- The hand detectors used by NASA personnel in the film are the same props used as a tricorder in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan .
