Xming is a display server for X11. A window manager is also required

Xming is an implementation of an X server for Windows . The Xming server is based on the X.Org server and is compiled with MinGW and POSIX threads. (Xming is not based on the Cygwin emulation, so it should not be confused with Cygwin / X.)

Xming can be used with SSH implementations such as PuTTY , so that X11 sessions can run encrypted from remote Unix machines. The Xming package does not include its own X clients.

License

Xming's license differs depending on where it is purchased. The official website states that all installation programs and components that can be downloaded from SourceForge are published under the public domain . However, those and other files and documentation from the official website are under a very restrictive license with all rights reserved. Potential users from the commercial or public sector must first apply for an individual license, specifying the number of installations. Academic institutions with fees must also apply for individual licenses. Individuals who want to download the software for at home have to pay for a license that is valid for one year.

In previous versions, the software was released under the GPL, but made additional restrictions that the GPL itself does not allow. After the FSF had corrected this, the reference to the use of the GPL was removed.
