action

New York in the late 1950s. To escape the hectic downtown life, people head to the Coney Island amusement park on the waterfront in Brooklyn, where you'll find a ferris wheel , carousels and a swimming beach where Mickey Rubin is a lifeguard to keep an eye on things. Humpty, the operator of a merry-go-round, also makes his living with those looking for entertainment. His wife, Ginny, works as a waitress at a nearby clam house serving clam dishes. She has a little son who keeps on fire .

One day, the couple received an unexpected visit from Humpty's daughter, with whom they had not been in contact for years. Carolina had married a gangster against her father's wishes , but separated from him again and testified to the FBI . Now she is completely penniless on the run from his people.

Mickey is studying literature and later wants to write plays. He and Ginny have a love affair and Ginny hopes for a better life with him where she can resume her acting career. But Carolina also arouses Mickey's interest - watched jealously by Ginny.

One evening Carolina and Mickey meet in a pizzeria . The gangsters look for Carolina again and Ginny answers the phone to warn Carolina. When she got the restaurant on the line, she hangs up again. Mickey Carolina confesses his love in the restaurant. They both say goodbye in front of the restaurant and you can see the black limousine following the gangster Carolina.

The next morning Humpty asks Mickey if Carolina stayed with him. Mickey truthfully replies that they broke up outside the restaurant. Mickey begins investigating and then confronts Ginny about why she hung up when she called the restaurant without warning Carolina. Ginny has been drinking and is pretending not to understand. Mickey leaves her.

Humpty also drank again because the loss of his daughter had hit him hard. He implores Ginny not to leave him. Both face the ruins of their lives.

reception

Age ratings and reviews

In Germany the film is FSK 12 . The statement of reasons for the release states: “12-year-olds are able to follow the fantastically designed story and to process the increasingly dramatic situation of the characters appropriately. There are no scenes of violence that could affect viewers aged 12 and over; the drama develops primarily through the dialogues. In addition, the film is set in a nostalgically exaggerated environment, which makes it easier to distance yourself emotionally. "

Martina Knoben from the Süddeutsche Zeitung thinks that the screenplay for Wonder Wheel revolves around its own axis as sedately as the Ferris wheel that gives it its title, but Kate Winslet's game is an experience: “The scene in which she tells Mickey her life is like one Film for itself. ”The fact that Mickey, of all people, acts as the narrator, Knoben continues, is increasingly turning out to be an unfortunate choice, and the perspective could explain why the film seems so plain and wooden theatrical and Mickey remains a rather bland character . Even Humpty or Carolina, recently played by Juno Temple, are little more than cogs in the narrative, according to Knoben.

The Guardian's Benjamin Lee says that like Kate Winslet's character, Woody Allen is stuck in the past and Wonder Wheel is a stifling reminder of his present.
