Darius Khondji (born October 21, 1955 in Tehran , Iran ) is a French cameraman .
biography
Darius Khondji was born in Tehran to an Iranian father and a French mother. He spent his childhood in Paris and began making short films as a child. Since a science school diploma was required to study film in France , but he only had an artistic degree, he decided in 1977 to study film at the University of California . On the way there, he made a stopover in New York City and was immediately fascinated by the city. He decided to enroll at New York University and graduated from there. During his studies, he also deviated from his original plan to become a director, as he found that he was "more interested in creating a mood for a story than telling the story itself."
In the 80s he worked for smaller French productions as a camera assistant and also as a cameraman. His first major international success came in 1991 with his work on the film Delicatessen by Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet . The dark atmosphere of this film should be archetypal for his later work. For the film The City of Lost Children he worked again successfully with Jeunet / Caro in 1995. In the same year he returned to the USA to direct the film Seven with David Fincher ; for this work he won the 1996 Chicago Film Critics Association 's award for best cinematography. Also in 1996 he made the film Evita with Alan Parker , for which he won his only Academy Award nomination for best cinematography. In 1997 there was again a collaboration with Jean-Pierre Jeunet for the film Alien - The Rebirth , which was not very successful at the box office. Other notable films with his participation on the camera, the films The Beach by Danny Boyle and Panic Room by David Fincher.
Darius Khondji not only made feature films, but also music videos . He worked with director Chris Cunningham on the clips for Frozen by Madonna and Africa Shox by Leftfield . The video for Dirge von Death in Vegas (directed by Richard Fearless and Richard Fenwick) was also made with Khondji as cameraman.
Khondji is married and has three children.
