The Sunken City Z (original title The Lost City of Z ) is an adventure film by James Gray , which premiered on October 15, 2016 as the graduation film at the New York Film Festival. The sunken city of Z tells the story of the explorer Percy Fawcett .

The British officer Percival Harrison Fawcett traveled to the jungle for the first time in 1906 on behalf of His Majesty as a royal surveyor, where he was supposed to mediate in a border conflict between Brazil and Bolivia. He is also supposed to map the unexplored territory. With his assistant Henry Costin and a small crew he penetrates into the jungle on a small raft and comes across ceramics, idols and ruins, which he recognizes as clues to an ancient, unknown civilization. However, they have no time for further investigations.
Even on the battlefields of World War I, Percy Fawcett always carries a small drawing of his paradise with him. Just a few years after the end of the war, he went back to the Amazon jungle to look for the legendary sunken city of Z. He is accompanied by his son.

Directed by James Gray . The film is based on David Grann 's non-fiction book of the same name from 2009, about the real Percy Fawcett . The British aristocratic son, highly decorated soldier, geographer, world traveler and hobby anthropologist undertook a number of expeditions to the previously unexplored Amazon region at the beginning of the 20th century, in order to find a lost civilization in the city he named "Z" . He did not return from his last trip to the Rio Xingu in 1925 , which he made with his older son, and his fate is still unclear to this day. Fawcett was friends with writers such as Rudyard Kipling , Arthur Conan Doyle, and H. Rider Haggard . In 2005 there was a spectacular find when the archaeologist Michael Heckenberger discovered the remnants of the civilization that Fawcett believed to exist and that repeatedly eluded him. This was the reason for Grann's book.
The project was preceded by numerous castings , regarding the male lead. First was Brad Pitt , slated for Colonel Percy Fawcett. He should also take on tasks in the film for his film production company Plan B Entertainment . Ultimately, he was involved in the film as an executive producer . Tom Holland plays in the film Jack Fawcett, Charlie Hunnam took over the role of Percy Fawcett , Robert Pattinson plays Henry Costin, and Sienna Miller took over the role of Nina Fawcett. In the German dubbing, Jack Fawcett is voiced by Christian Zeiger , Björn Schalla dubbed Percy Fawcett, Johannes Raspe Henry Costin and Luise Helm Nina Fawcett.
Filming began on August 19, 2015 in Belfast, where filming took place at Methodist College, Science Park and City Hall, among other places. The film was filmed in Greyabbey Village and Strangford Lough in Northern Ireland on August 28, 2015 and at Craigavon House in East Belfast on September 2, 2015 . Later in September 2015, filming continued in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and Rio Don Diego in Colombia .
The score was composed by Christopher Spelman , who created the music for Gray's 2013 film The Immigrant . Classical music pieces by Igor Stravinsky , Maurice Ravel , Johann Strauss Sohn , Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Giuseppe Verdi , Ludwig van Beethoven , Johann Sebastian Bach and a number of other composers were also used for the film music . The soundtrack for the film includes 17 pieces of music.
The film premiered on October 15, 2016 at the New York Film Festival and was presented at the Berlinale from February 14, 2017. The film was released in German cinemas on March 30, 2017 and in selected US cinemas on April 14, 2017.

In Germany the film is FSK 12. In the statement of reasons for the release it says: “There are several moments of tension (fights with natives; an encounter with cannibals; scenes from the First World War), but these are brief; isolated moments of violence are not played out.
