action

Since his fiancée dumped him shortly before the wedding, Leonard has been living with his parents, who run a laundry in Brooklyn , New York . His grief goes so far that he has already tried several suicide attempts. His parents introduce him to the young Sandra, daughter of a couple who are friends, and shortly afterwards he starts a relationship with her.

At a chance encounter in the stairwell, however, Leonard also meets his pretty, uncomplicated neighbor Michelle and falls in love with her. But Michelle has an affair with a married man, the brilliant and wealthy lawyer Ronald Blatt. Since he promises to finally leave his wife for her, but does not do so, Michelle suffers a lot and in her desperation even uses drugs. She unloads her worries at Leonard until he has had enough of it and she can not be seen for a while. But when Michelle suffers a miscarriage, Leonard is the one who stands by her during this time. In the meantime, he hides this relationship from Sandra, who has since noticed that Leonard is depressed by something.

Michelle decides to finally break up with Ronald and thus stirs up new hopes for Leonard. Shortly afterwards he confesses his love to her and cheats on Sandra with her. The two decide to run away to San Francisco together and Leonard arranges plane tickets for the next day. He also uses his savings to buy a ring for Michelle. During a party at his parents' home, at which Sandra is also present, he tries to sneak away, but is surprised by his mother. He says goodbye to her without giving any further details, just assuring her that he is happy. She tells him that he is always welcome. However, when Michelle appears at the appointed time, she reveals to him that Ronald has now left his family for her and that they are together again. Leonard is heartbroken and goes to the beach where his last suicide attempt took place. He regains his senses and returns to his parents' party.

The film ends with Leonard giving Sandra the ring that was intended for Michelle. When Sandra wonders about his tears, he replies that he is just happy.

reception

Andreas Borcholte wrote in the magazine Der Spiegel on May 20, 2008 that the film was “filled with relish with all sorts of homages to cinema classics such as Lubitsch and Hitchcock . Paltrow and Phoenix would play “boldly” and “give the weaknesses and damage to their characters so much credibility” that the film would be worth watching. Vinessa Shaw is the "real discovery" .

Hanns-Georg Rodek wrote in the daily newspaper Die Welt on May 20, 2008 that the character played by Phoenix was so weak that he “doesn't even deserve to be called an antihero” . Paltrow howl too much. In the end, the viewer wishes that the suicide attempt made by the character of Phoenix at the beginning "would have been successful" .

Silke Roesler wrote on October 21, 2010 on Critic.de that “the New York filmmaker staged the advertising with a precise eye, the courtship for each other in appropriate rooms” . These "gray" never just serve as a backdrop for the plot, but literally imprint themselves in them, condition them and drive them forward. "

The lexicon of international films assesses the film as a "melancholy, melancholy love drama about a three-way relationship, staged in a dark noir style, which, despite high ambitions and tints of sarcastic humor, is too long to be captivating."

Awards

In 2008, Gray's film competed for the Palme d'Or at the 61st Cannes Film Festival , but remained unprivileged.

The National Board of Review awarded the film in 2009 in the category of Top Independent Films . Joaquín Phoenix was named Best Foreign Actor at the 2011 Sant Jordi Awards .
