James Gray (born April 14, 1969 in New York City ) is an American director and screenwriter with Russian-Jewish ancestors.

Life

Gray graduated from the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts with a degree in film in 1991 and wrote the screenplay for his first film Little Odessa , which he also directed. The film received critical acclaim and won the Silver Lion at the 1994 Venice Film Festival .

In 2000 he directed the Miramax- produced film The Yards - In the backyard of power with Mark Wahlberg and Joaquin Phoenix in the leading roles. But there was no success. With his thriller Heroes of the Night - We Own the Night 2007 he achieved a far greater success, both critically and commercially. A year later he competed with Two Lovers for the third time unsuccessfully in the competition at the Cannes International Film Festival . In 2009 he was appointed to the competition jury at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival .

He is married to Alexandra Dickson, with whom he has two children.
