action

In 1921 the Polish Catholic sisters Ewa and Magda arrived on Ellis Island as immigrants. They hope for a better life after escaping their devastated home in post-war Poland. Magda is quarantined because of a lung disease. Uncle and aunt, who are already established in New York and are supposed to vouch for them, do not appear. Ewa is almost sent back, but Bruno, who is Jewish, becomes aware of her and notices that she speaks fluent English. He gets an officer to let her stay and takes her to his house. Knowing that Ewa needs money to get Magda free, Bruno lets her dance in the Bandits' Roost Theater and prostitutes her. Bruno also develops a romantic interest in her. Ewa is looking for her relatives in New York, but her uncle takes her to the authorities because he wants to distance himself from a prostitute. Police take her to Ellis Island and she has to fear deportation a second time. In Ellis Island, Ewa sees an appearance by Emil, Bruno's cousin. Ewa meets Emil again in the Bandits' Roost. In an incident, Bruno kills Emil. Ewa learns that Bruno had enough money to buy her sister out, but he kept it from her because he didn't want her to leave him. Then corrupt police officers steal his money. With money from her aunt and with the help of Bruno's relationships, Ewa Magda can buy her free. Women should start a new life in the West. Bruno does not go with them in order to avoid the persecution of the police. He wants to confess the manslaughter to Emil.

Reviews

“ Immigrant melodrama filmed in sepia tones , which, in the story of suffering of its fantastically played main character , ties in with the silent film era . The film keeps the balance between realism and consciously used emotionality. "
