Death in Vegas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Death in Vegas is a British band founded in London ( Great Britain ) in 1994 whose sound includes elements of pop , psychedelic rock , big beat and dub .

Band history

Death in Vegas was founded in 1994 by Richard Fearless and Steve Helier under the name Dead Elvis and shortly thereafter received a recording contract with Concrete Records . Because of reservations from Elvis Presley's heirs , they were forced to rename the band Death in Vegas ; however, Dead Elvis was the name of their 1997 debut album. The pieces on this album were heavily influenced by dub , techno and partly also big beat and trip-hop . Steve Helier left the band shortly after the album was released and was replaced by Tim Holmes, who was already involved in the production of Dead Elvis .

In 1999 the album The Contino Sessions was released , on which more real instruments and guest singers were used for the first time. Dot Allison, Iggy Pop , Bobby Gillespie ( Primal Scream ) and Jim Reid ( Jesus And Mary Chain ) appeared on this album . The sound was now more influenced by rock; electronic elements were still clearly present. Due to the success of the song Dirge , which was used in a commercial for the Levi's company , the band became known to a wider public. In 2000 Death in Vegas were nominated for the Mercury Music Prize .

The album Scorpio Rising was released in June 2003 and marked a partial return for the band to their electronic roots. The album title is inspired by the film of the same name by Kenneth Anger . As with the previous album The Contino Sessions , real instruments and guest singers like Liam Gallagher , Paul Weller and Hope Sandoval were also used. The song Girls was also featured on the soundtrack for the film Lost in Translation . Scorpio Rising was the last album for the Concrete Records label , from which Death in Vegas parted after ten years.

After they founded their own label Drone Records , their fourth album, Satan's Circus , was released after contributing to the remix series Back to Mine . In contrast to the two previous albums, there were no guest singers here; the music now had a much more electronic touch, which is partly reminiscent of Kraftwerk . Satan's Circus was also released as a special edition with an additional live CD that was recorded on the Scorpio Rising tour at Brixton Academy in London .
