The Jesus and Mary Chain is a Scottish rock band from East Kilbride . The group existed from 1984 to 1999 and has been active again since 2007. The Jesus and Mary Chain is mostly attributed to alternative rock and noise pop and is one of the pioneers of shoegazing . The band founders Jim and William Reid were influenced by the pop music of the 1960s, punk pioneers like The Velvet Underground and the work of the music producer Phil Spector ( Wall of Sound ).

Band history

The band was determined by the two brothers Jim (* 1961 in Glasgow ) and William Reid (* 1958 in Glasgow). There was also a frequently changing line-up, which initially included bassist Douglas Hart and Primal Scream front man Bobby Gillespie . In 1984 the decision was made to name the band The Jesus and Mary Chain. The first concert took place on June 9, 1984 in the London club The Living Room. Although The Jesus and Mary Chain is not on the C86 - compilation - a sampler, the British music magazine New Musical Express in collaboration with the label Rough Trade brought out in 1986 as a cassette - was present, they are generally this direction, the groundbreaking for the Indie -Music was included.

At early concerts in front of a small audience, The Jesus and Mary Chain usually played very short gigs , sometimes only ten minutes , often distorted cover versions of well-known hits, or they produced a single long-lasting background noise from feedback and disturbances. They stood with their backs to the audience and verbally abused or spat at journalists and photographers who were present. Many appearances ended with the Reid brothers smashing their gear. Alan McGee (the head of her former record label Creation Records ) used these appearances to promote the band and to get headlines in the music press.

Musically, the album Psychocandy was an important influence on the emergence of the Shoegaze scene, and many indie bands still cover songs by the group today. During a performance in Los Angeles in September 1998, the Reid brothers fell out so much that William left the stage during the concert and did not perform publicly with his brother for many years. Without William, the band ended their tour and officially broke up in October 1999.

In 2007 the band reformed and headlined the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April . In Germany she played at the M'era Luna Festival in August 2007 . On March 18, 2008, the band released their first studio recording since 1998, the song All Things Must Pass on the soundtrack album of the TV show Heroes .

On March 24, 2017, the band released the album Damage and Joy .
