Creation Records was a British record label that signed many successful bands such as Primal Scream , Oasis , Felt , My Bloody Valentine , Ride and Jesus And Mary Chain between 1983 and 2000 .

history

Creation Records was founded in 1983 by Alan McGee on a £ 1000 loan . The name comes from the British band The Creation , which McGee admired at the time and whose comeback albums Power Surge and Lay The Ghost he released. With the release of the single "Upside Down" (1984) by Jesus and Mary Chain, the band and the Creation label became well known. Although McGee managed JAMC, they switched to Blanco y Negro to record their first album, Psychocandy. In 1998 JAMC returned to Creation. As a result, many successful British bands from the 1990s were signed to Creation Records, including Primal Scream , Jesus And Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine , The House Of Love , Teenage Fanclub , Ride and Oasis .

In 1990, with the release of Ride's Nowhere, Creation got its first chart position in the top 20. Ride got its first top 10 position in 1992 with the song Leave Them All Behind . In 1991 the groundbreaking albums "Screamadelica" by Primal Scream and "Loveless" by My Bloody Valentine were released . However, the “independent” status of the label was increasingly weakened, as financial difficulties led to a cooperation and finally a takeover by Sony Music . In 1993, McGee Oasis discovered King Tut's Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow and immediately signed them. Their 1994 album Definitely Maybe entered the UK charts at number 1. The follow-up album "What's the Story Morning Glory?" sold 10 million copies worldwide and made Oasis one of the greatest rock bands of the time. Other albums have appeared from Sugar , the Boo Radleys and the Super Furry Animals . The next few years were marked by the great success of Oasis. McGee took advantage of the financial independence that the income from Oasis gave him to sign bands and artists he believed in.

McGee always saw Creation as a "rock and roll" label rather than an "indie" label. McGee's mission had originally been to give non-conformist artists a chance at Creation Records. He saw his label change increasingly under the influence of Sony. As a consequence, Alan McGee and Dick ended Green Creation Records in January 2000 and closed the label. Years later, McGee founded the Poptones label, a label primarily for digital music. The last album to be released on Creation Records in 2000 was significantly XTRMNTR by Primal Scream, the band of McGee's oldest friend Bobby Gillespie.
