Stephen Street

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stephen Street (* 1960 in London ) is one of the most influential producers in the field of (mainly British) guitar and indie pop , alongside Hugh Jones , John Leckie and Nigel Godrich . Street not only produced a number of LPs by perhaps the most important British band of the 1980s, The Smiths , as well as the first Morrissey solo LP, but worked very closely with the band Blur for a very long time in the 1990s . He also produced The Cranberries and - in recent years - the Kaiser Chiefs .

With some bands, the collaboration was either limited to singles or to individual LP pieces. With Idlewild, for example, Street wanted to record the LP The Remote Part in 2002 , but did not succeed (the band decided after the test recordings for Lenny Kaye and only left one track produced by Street). In 1986 the same thing happened with the first LP by Primal Scream , which at the time was still a typical C86 band. They discarded the first recordings of Sonic Flower Groove they had made with Street and had the record produced by Mayo Thompson .

Album productions (selection)

Stephen Street produced the following albums either alone or in part.

Babyshambles

Pete Doherty's band managed to jump into higher chart regions with these albums, which were produced by Street.

Blur

Street has long been considered the band's in-house producer. Blur celebrated their greatest successes in the time in which street shaped their sound (especially 1994-1997). On the occasion of the 2015 released album The Magic Whip , Street worked again with the band.

Bradford

Bradford were Morrissey's favorite band for a short time in the late 1980s and received a lot of attention. Street produced her debut album.

  • 1990: Shouting Quietly

Catatonia

The debut LP, before Catatonia had major success with the single Mulder & Scully , produced ao Street.

  • 1996: Way Beyond Blue

Graham Coxon

After Coxon's departure from Blur (2002), the old contacts between the guitarist and Street were renewed.

  • 2003: Happiness in Magazines
  • 2006: Love Travels at Illegal Speeds
  • 2009: The Spinning Top

The cranberries

Street produced the band's most successful albums. After a long break, he came back on track in 2001 and was also the producer of two songs in the compilation Stars - The Best of the Cranberries 1992-2002

Stephen Duffy

Street was "only" involved in the first two LPs of Stephen Duffy , who also plays guitar on The Lilac Time and is active as a lead singer. He then took over the 1998 production himself.

  • 1985: The Ups and Downs
  • 1986: Because We Love You
  • 1998: I Love My Friends

The Durutti Column

Like The Smiths from Manchester, Vini Reilly's The Durutti Column made instrumental, very guitar-heavy pieces. Reilly was also the guitarist on Morrissey's debut Viva Hate .

  • 1987: The Guitar and Other Machines
  • 1990: Vini Reilly

Kaiser Chiefs

Both LPs by the rock band , which was extremely successful in Great Britain, were produced in collaboration with the sound engineer Cenzo Townshend, who was in great demand , especially during the Madchester phase .

Morrissey

On Morrissey's debut album, Street not only wrote the music, but also played bass and guitar. Vini Reilly , the guitarist for The Durutti Column , played guitar here.

The Promise Ring

Street's solid production work had got around in the US as well. This was the fourth record in the group , which soon broke up.

  • 2002: Wood / Water

The Pretenders

  • 1994: Last of the Independents
  • 1999: pop star

Shed Seven

Shed Seven , the band initially highly praised by the NME and later often reviled, had Street produce their third album. He prescribed them a rougher sound than on the previous publications.

  • 1998: Let It Ride

Sleeper

Sleeper was a fairly successful Britpop group in Great Britain in the mid-1990s, with Street producing all of their albums.

  • 1995: Smart
  • 1996: The It Girl
  • 1997: Pleased to Meet You

The Smiths

After the first record, The Smiths (1984), produced by John Porter , Street took over the production and lived not only the time of the album The Queen Is Dead , which most considered the creative high point of the band , but also the recordings for the last LP, which were marked by disputes .

Suede

Suede's farewell album was jointly produced by Street and John Leckie.

  • 2002: A New Morning
