Ruy Sánchez has published almost 20 works so far that have been translated into different languages, including a. into French and Arabic. His first novel Los nombres del aire (t: The names of the air ) was awarded the Premio Xavier Villaurrutia, Mexico's most important literary prize, in 1987, in the year it was published, and has since been considered a cult book that is reprinted every year. The short novel describes the awakening desire of a young Muslim woman and her restless forays through the city of Mogador in search of erotic fulfillment. Ruy Sánchez combines elements of magical realism with Arabic mysticism and conjures up a mood of sensuality and spirituality in everyday Islamic life. Mogador is the old name of the city of Essaouira on the Moroccan Atlantic coast and forms the imaginary center of the narrative labyrinth in Ruy Sánchez's work, to which he repeatedly returns in later stories, e.g. B. in De cómo llegó a Mogador la Melancolía (1999, t: How melancholy came to Mogador). In his constant circles around the city of Mogador, Ruy Sánchez tries to reconstruct the Arab roots of Hispanic culture and identity in a fictitious way. In addition to novels and short stories, Ruy Sánchez has also published poetry, including a haiku cycle and extensive collections of essays. His work on literature, art, philosophy, eroticism and film has earned him the reputation of "one of the best essayists in Mexico" (Octavio Paz).
