life and work

Early years

Jacques Rancière, born in Algiers in 1940, studied philosophy at the Ecole Normale Supérieure from 1960 to 1965 , where he received the Diplôme d'études supérieures in 1963 with a thesis on the young Marx and the aggregation in 1964. From 1964 he took part in Louis Althusser's seminar on Capital , from which a first contribution, also translated into German, emerged: “The Concept of Critique and the Critique of Political Economy”. After a year as a philosophy teacher at a Paris high school, Ranciére began in 1966 with a doctoral thesis on Feuerbach at the CNRS, which he broke off in 1968. Chosen by Michel Foucault , Rancière was appointed assistant at the University of Paris VIII (then in Vincennes) in 1968. At this university, where he became Maître-Assistant in 1972, Maître de Conference in 1985 and Professor in 1990, Rancière taught, apart from a few visiting professors, until his retirement in 2000.

After breaking with Althusser in 1968, he worked primarily as an activist in a Maoist group. In 1972, however, Rancière, under the influence of Foucault, withdrew into the archives. This historical research led to the dissertation in 1980, which was published under the title “La Nuit des Prolétaires: Archives du rêve ouvrier”.

From 1986 to 1992, Rancière also served as program director at the Collège International de Philosophie.

La Mésentente / The disagreement

La Mésentente (1995), Rancière's most influential text to date, represents an attempt to think of politics as a chain of subjectivizations , as a practice of dispute that begins in the Greek polis . The struggle between rich and poor, between the powerful and those excluded from power is therefore not a problem that has to be resolved through politics, but politics itself. In that the social share of the disinterested (“la part des sans-part”) takes its place Becomes aware of his position and stands up for his rights, social structures are revised. This means u. a. also a rejection of the ostensible consensus of a media-based politics.

The term police , as Rancière defines it, is also important , namely as a direct contrast to politics, as a definition of inequality in the distribution of social shares: it defines the relationships between the subjects, denies the existence of those who have no shares, the existence of something immeasurable . Political dispute ( dissent ) is the break with such an order and thus politics in the sense of Rancière.

Work on aesthetics

Since the early 1990s, Rancière has primarily been concerned with questions of aesthetics ; he writes u. a. Texts on painting and film theory . His starting point here is a criticism of the principle of representation as it is based on Aristotle 's concept of mimesis . With the emergence of modern literature in the 19th century, according to Rancière, there was also a change in perception, an emancipation of the written word from any representation function. It is in this area of tension that he locates the emergence of the medium of film, which is both representation and de-hierarchized discourse. He criticizes Gilles Deleuze's film theory and considers its separation of the image of movement and time to be untenable.

Le destin des images (2003) underlines the sensual quality of images: they are not only depiction, but can also be experienced directly, not subject to any order. It is precisely these considerations that help Rancière gain popularity in theater and media studies . For example, Hans-Thies Lehmann, as a theoretician of post-dramatic theater, repeatedly refers to Jacques Rancière in his essays.
