From 2012 to 2018 she was Professor of Curating and Mediating Art at Aalto University in Helsinki . Since January 2018 she has held the documenta professorship at the Kunsthochschule Kassel. Since 2006 she has been part of the management team of the master’s course ecm - educating / curating / managing for exhibition theory and practice at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. In addition, she is an intersection in the core team of the network . exhibition theory & praxis , was appointed to the board of the IG Bildende Kunst and is a member of the editorial board of the magazine Bildpunkt .

In her book The Pedagogical Disproportion (Teaching and Learning with Rancière, Gramsci and Foucault), Sternfeld tries to use the political discourses of Antonio Gramsci , Michel Foucault and Jacques Rancière for a critical definition of the position of education . Your reasoning is post-structuralist . In it, she criticizes the inflationary use of both the term equal opportunities and the call for lifelong learning . The former serve as a distraction "from the reality of social inequality", the latter level instead of differentiating. In her review of the book, Sophie Goltz comes to the conclusion that it offers "learners and teachers a differentiated view [...] of the demand, based on Foucault," not to be governed in such a way - neither through education nor through its economization . "

Curatorial projects came about in collaboration with the IG Bildende Kunst , the museum in progress and the Vienna Main Library . Sternfeld is also internationally networked and belongs to Freethought , a transnational platform for research, teaching and production based in London, which also includes the well-known curators Stefano Harney , Adrian Heathfield , Massiliano Mollona , Louis Moreno and Irit Rogoff . In this context, she was also appointed as co-curator for the Bergen Assembly 2016.

Quote

“Are exhibition contexts places of refuge for critical teaching and learning, pioneers of their total economization, or both? And what does that mean for critical mediation practice? "
