In principle, a flip-flop is an electronic circuit that knows two states, namely switched on and switched off. There are three main types:
- Bistable multivibrator : both states stable (flip-flop)
- Monostable multivibrator : a stable state (monoflop)
- Astable flip-flop : both states metastable (multiflop)
In a broader sense, this also includes
- Comparator (analog technology) : A comparator larger / smaller
- Schmitt trigger : A comparator with offset switching points
