The Great Escape is the fourth studio album by the British rock band Blur . It was released in England on September 11, 1995.

style

After the “happy” and playful Parklife, this album seems almost a little melancholy in terms of content . Almost all of the songs are about loneliness and "separations". The album has also been described as the “downside” of Parklife , rather than working-class characters , it's more about characters from the suburbs and the problems of modern life.

Musically, the band continues their search through all possible variants of pop music (especially from the 1960s). Pieces like The Universal continue the idea of a to the end and testify to the courage to large arrangements, choirs and orchestral and big band-like instrumentalizations. The first single, Country House , is another example of the Britpop sound.

The "Battle of Britpop" or "Battle of the Bands"

Because The Great Escape coincided with the second album (What's the Story) Morning Glory? was published by Oasis , the press incited a "Battle of Britpop" between the two bands.

While Blur narrowly won the race with the single Country House for the time being, The Great Escape did not sell as many as the competition's album in the end. A side effect of the "battle" was that the previous two albums now also arouse interest outside of England. A single like Charmless Man was again designed to be more compatible with the masses and received more positive fan reactions.
