Catatonia (cf. Katatonie ) was a British band. They were one of the most popular rock bands in Great Britain in the 1990s .
Band members were the singer Cerys Matthews , the guitarists Mark Roberts and Owen Powell, bassist Paul Jones and drummer Aled Richards. Most of Catatonia's songs are by Mark Roberts.
Cerys Matthews in particular became the band's figurehead. Her rough, vulnerable voice made her a fairly well-known sex symbol in the British Isles in the late 1990s. However, this unwanted fame also led to problems: she suffered from anxiety and nervous disorders. The lead singer's excessive alcohol consumption also made headlines. On the islands, Cerys was considered a "man" when it came to beer drinking. The band had to cancel several concerts and the internal band atmosphere also deteriorated. In 2001, after the release of their last album Paper Scissors Stone , the band broke up.
style
The band appealed to a wide audience with catchy pop melodies and was still able to integrate a certain amount of experimental and potentially disturbing sound elements. The result was a mixture of classic pop songs and indie rock. Like many artists from Wales, they played with their image. For one thing, singer Cerys Matthews emphasized her Welsh accent in English, the lyrics are partly in Welsh, and her homeland often plays a role in the songs. On the other hand, they too are actually cosmopolitans .
