Delicatessen is a French feature film directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro in 1991 . The film is the feature film debut of the two directors and already shows numerous stylistic elements and motifs from the later successful films The City of Lost Children and The Fabulous World of Amélie .

The bizarre plot takes place in a gloomy city ruin in an unspecified dystopian place and at an unspecified time. The fashion, hairstyle and furnishings are based on the 1940s style. There is hardly any meat or other food left. A butcher was therefore able to earn murderous prosperity: he regularly hires new caretakers so that they can be slaughtered after just a few days and then sold in portions to the starving residents - in exchange for corn, the official currency. The latest victim is Louison, a former clown who may have little meat on his ribs, but who is able to settle in quite well with technical skills. But when Julie, the butcher's daughter, falls in love with Louison, things start to get out of hand.
The grotesque framework plot ( cannibalism ) and a bizarre backdrop offer all kinds of eccentric and comical characters their playground - each of them intervenes in the plot in his own way, without wanting to. There is a life-weary middle-class woman who tries in vain every day to put an end to her life with a creatively constructed Rube Goldberg device , just because she hears strange voices - which, as it later turns out, come from a water pipe be whispered to a malevolent roommate. Or an old frog and snail lover who has made himself comfortable in a damp dungeon with his little friends. There is a postman who desires the butcher's daughter, or a grandmother who knits endlessly on a sweater that is wound up on the wool spindle at the other end. And last but not least, a group of clumsy underground rebels, the troglodists, who run around in the sewer system like miners with helmet lamps because of the darkness.
Opening credits
The film has an original attribution : while name and function are mentioned, the camera shows objects and work equipment from the department, for example tailoring tools and a piece of clothing for “costumes”, a folding rule for “decoration” or a broken record for “music”.

Delicatessen was awarded four Césars for script, editing and production design as well as for the best debut film.
