Joaquim de Almeida , actually Joaquim António Portugal Baptista de Almeida , (born March 15, 1957 in Lisbon , Portugal ) is a Portuguese-American actor .

Life

Joaquim de Almeida left his home country at the age of 18 and lived in Vienna for two years . After his marriage to the budding pianist Maria Cecilia de Almeida, he moved to New York in 1977 . He first worked there as a waiter and bartender. There de Almeida discovered acting for himself and made his debut in 1982 in The Mercenary . De Almeida mainly appears in Portuguese , Spanish and French-language films. His best-known Hollywood films include The Cartel with Harrison Ford and Willem Dafoe and Desperado , in which he can be seen alongside Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek . He also played in the series Miami Vice in the ninth episode ( Bought and Paid ) of the second season, the Bolivian son-general and Playboy rapist Nico Arroyo .

Joaquim de Almeida received the Cairo Film Festival's Best Actor Award for Retrato de Família in 1992 and a Globo de Ouro in Portugal in 1997 . For his role as the Mexican drug lord in the third season of the television series 24 , he was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award in 2005, along with the other cast of the series in the category Best Acting Ensemble.

He is also active as a voice actor and producer for Portuguese films.

Joaquim de Almeida has been a US citizen since October 8, 2005. He is fluent in Portuguese, Spanish, English, French, Italian and German.
