Náufragos - Stranded (Original title: Stranded: Náufragos ) is a Spanish science fiction film from 2001, shot in English , about the first manned landing on the planet Mars .

action

With a crew of seven under the command of Andre Vishniac, the Ares spacecraft will reach Mars orbit in 2020 . Six of the astronauts attempt to land while the spacecraft pilot, Lowell, remains aboard the Ares . The landing capsule fails for technical reasons and crashes. Vishniac dies, the remaining five astronauts survive the accident. Lowell cannot bring his comrades back and returns to Earth. However, it will take 26 months before a rescue mission can reach Mars. The five survivors only have enough supplies for one year.

Since water and air treatment are electrically operated, the astronauts need to find a way to get the generator running. Since the landing capsule cannot be repaired, the geologist Sagan plans to use the excess fuel to propel an improvised reactor that will produce methane and water vapor. But the capsule's tank and the propulsion rockets are destroyed.

All the crew's calculations show that you can survive on Mars for a maximum of 14 months. According to the crew, the only possibility of rescue is that only two of the astronauts can survive the 26 months with the supplies. Sánchez, the new commander, decides that she, Sagan and Rodrigo, will leave the crew and that Baglioni and Johnson will allow the rescue. She justifies her decision with the fact that these three do not have the necessary knowledge to benefit the team.

Sánchez, Sagan and Rodrigo get into their spacesuits and leave the landing capsule. You go to the Valles Marineris near which the crash took place. Radar measurements show a labyrinth-like structure under a cloud of steam within the rift valley. The structure appears to be artificial and resembles another structure near the south pole of Mars. The three astronauts try to get to the bottom of the trench before they run out of oxygen.

While Sagan dies of a lack of oxygen during the descent, Rodrigo and Sánchez reach an artificial tunnel. You will find mummified corpses of human-like aliens there. You can see that the pressure and oxygen levels in some of the tunnels are Earth-like. However, Rodrigo accidentally enters one of the atmospheric tunnels and dies. Sánchez contacts Baglioni and Johnson, who at the same time discover that the lander is losing oxygen. Sánchez is able to guide them to where they have enough water and oxygen to wait for the rescue mission to arrive.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films describes the work as a “quietly developed science fiction drama that tries to fathom the psychology of the protagonists and is interspersed with slightly philosophical set pieces. The attractively equipped low-budget film also documents the director's lack of experience, who can only implement her ambition to a limited extent and does not give the characters any persuasive power ”.
