The election campaigner (Original title: Our Brand Is Crisis ) is a film drama directed by David Gordon Green from 2015 with Sandra Bullock in the lead role. The plot is inspired by Rachel Boynton's documentary Our Brand Is Crisis about the Bolivian presidential campaign in 2002.

action

The Bolivian presidential candidate Pedro Castillo does very poorly in the polls and hires a group of accomplished American campaign advisors under the leadership of the badly ailing but still brilliant strategist "Calamity Jane" Bodine (Bullock). Jane got her nickname from a scandal that shook her deeply. The fact that she is still getting involved in the new campaign has to do with her archenemy, the disgusting Pat Candy (Thornton), who works for the most promising candidate to date, Victor Rivera. Jane finally gets the chance to beat Candy. But Candy knows Jane's sore points - privately and during the election campaign - only too well, and as a result she plunges into a personal crisis that can be compared to the situation that is exploited by her team to improve the polling results of the other side.

criticism

source rating
IMDb

"The film fluctuates a little undecided between high-pitched farce and pessimistic thriller, but it still offers humorous entertainment thanks to the courageous performances of Sandra Bullock and Billy Bob Thornton."

- Carsten Baumgardt, film starts

"The election campaigner" loops between cynical comedy and serious subject matter. No matter how good Sandra Bullock is - the current US election campaign is better. "

- Susan Vahabzadeh, Sueddeutsche Zeitung

background

The role of Jane Bodine was written for a man and targeted by George Clooney. He had already secured the rights to the political documentary “Our Brand Is Crisis” by Rachel Boynton in 2007 with his production company Smoke House. The documentary revolves around the conservative presidential candidate Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada , who brought Washington strategists to Bolivia in 2002. As blonde Jane Bodine, Oscar winner Bullock had one of the worst US theatrical releases of her career.
