Carnations for Freedom (Original title: Capitães de Abril ) is a Portuguese film from 2000, which is set at the time of the Carnation Revolution in 1974.

action

When the forbidden song Grândola, Vila Morena rang out on the radio on the night of April 25, 1974 , it was the identification mark for those sections of the army prepared for the coup to intervene. The coup took its course and ended the regime of the Estado Novo and indirectly the Portuguese colonial war . The film tells the bloodless "revolution of the captains ( capitães )" in various converging narrative strands by accompanying the decisive personalities as well as ordinary people and intellectuals.

reception

The film is the first feature film that clearly depicts the Carnation Revolution. It is the directorial debut of Maria de Medeiros , who also embodies one of the main roles. It brings the circumstances of the coup closer by showing historical events and skillfully combining them with fictional stories. The film doesn't go too much into historical details or the social and political derivation of the events. It retains the narrative momentum and the accessibility for an audience used to entertainment films. The critics praised the film for the fluid interweaving of the various narrative strands, the camera and the successful atmosphere. The performances of the actors were praised as well as the film music, which was composed by Medeiros' father António Victorino de Almeida and whose main theme was performed by the Madredeus group .

The film won several awards; as one of the ten most watched Portuguese films between 1980 and 2001, it was an audience hit.

“The impressive debut film by the actress Maria de Madeiros focuses on the first 24 hours after the start of the coup and reflects the development using three exemplary people, with a memorial to the forgotten heroes of the revolution. Convincing actors and historical accuracy contribute to the success of the film, which is a little too long. "
