Joaquim do Nascimento Leitão Rodrigues (born December 21, 1956 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese film actor and director .

Life

He began in 1973, a law degree , which he broke 1975th He enrolled at the National Conservatory Film School and graduated in 1980 with a degree in film editing. He began directing a short film for the state television station RTP . In the course of his entire career, however, he has appeared in front of the camera as an actor.

In 1987 he shot Duma Vez Por Todas ("Once and for all"), an Alfred Hitchcock- influenced crime film with the later Madredeus founder Pedro Ayres Magalhães and Vicky von Schirnding de Almeida in the leading roles. The later crime film Ao Fim da Noite was also successful, both in the cinema and as a DVD re-release (in a collection of the daily newspaper Público , in which Uma Vida Normal appeared).

In 1994 he shot Uma Cidade Qualquer (“Any City”) with Ana Bustorff and Luís Alberto , and the tragic comedy Uma Vida Normal (“A completely normal life”) with Joaquim de Almeida in the lead role for the European Capital of Culture -Lisbon'94 , a critical look at modern urban life.

This was followed by Adão e Eva (“Adam and Eve”, 1995) with Maria de Medeiros as a bisexual TV presenter with a desire to have children and Joaquim de Almeida as her unsympathetic colleague, and Tentação (“Temptation”, 1997), who addresses some social and religious taboos. With Cristina Câmara as the pretty, drug-addicted "black sheep" of a small northern Portuguese village, with Joaquim de Almeida as the village pastor, and with music from the popular rock band Xutos & Pontapés , the thrillingly narrated drama becomes one of the most successful Portuguese films ever.

In 2005, on the occasion of Álvaro Cunhal's death, Leitão shot a television series about the life of the long-time leader of the Communist Party of Portugal , who was also a writer, minister and resistance fighter against the Salazar dictatorship. The thriller 20,30 , which followed in 2006 and was set in the Portuguese colonial war , could not attract any greater attention, which it all the more with the box office success A Esperança Está Onde Menos Se Espera ("Hope is where you least expect it", 2009).

He has also worked as an actor in many Portuguese cinema productions, including some of the most successful domestic films ever, such as O Lugar do Morto (“The Place of the Dead”, 1984), “Carnations for Freedom” (2000), Portugal SA (“Portugal GmbH ", 2004) or Call Girl (2007).

reception

The critics welcomed his first directorial work and saw in him the potential for a new change of direction in Portuguese cinema. His films were attested to have a captivating atmosphere and a technically as well as narrative performance, both in his crime films ( Duma Vez por Todas , Ao Fim da Noite ) and in his comedies ( Uma Vida Normal ). The audience also liked his films, some of which are among the 40 most successful domestic film productions since 2004, most recently his successful, socially critical entertainment film A Esperança Está Onde Menos Se Espera , with Virgílio Castelo and Ana Padrão in the leading roles. However, on the one hand, his films do not meet the special expectations of an auteur film , and on the other hand, since they do not fit into international, commercial cinema productions, Joaquim Leitão has so far been unable to achieve success outside of Portugal.
