For the first time he appeared in 1947 in the comedy Rapazes de hoje (Eng: Boys of Today) on a regular theater stage, in the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II . Since his role as Eric Birling in 1951 in Priestley's Está lá fora um Inspector (English title: An inspector is coming ) at the Teatro Avenida , he has been considered one of the most important actors of his generation. In 1961 he co-founded the Teatro Moderno , where he participated in all productions, until he switched to the management of the Teatro Experimental in Porto in 1963. At the side of the popular Raul Solnado , he played in 1975 in the greatest stage success after the Carnation Revolution , Schweik na Segunda Guerra Mundial (German: Schweik in World War II). From 1977 to 2000 he was a member of the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II ensemble.
After he had already taken on his first film role in 1951, published in 1952 by Eram Duzentos Irmãos (German: There were 200 brothers; director: Armando Vieira Pinto ), he appeared regularly in television films, TV series and feature films, including several films by Manoel de Oliveira .
