Nyköpings Mekaniska Verkstad was a machine factory in the Swedish city of Nyköping .

history

In 1855 Gustav Adolf Lundhqvist (1813–92) from Falun bought a factory that had been closed since 1844 and the shipyard in Nyköping. With the sponsor Johan Holm, the production of steamships was resumed in 1857. In addition, there was the construction of boilers and ovens and, from 1859, the construction of locomotives and wagons, including axles and wheels.

Eight steam locomotives were built in the factory . These were three narrow-gauge locomotives for Söderhamns Jernvägs Aktiebolag for the operation of the Söderhamn – Bollnäs communications trail and five standard-gauge locomotives for Statens Järnvägar . These five class B (I) locomotives were built between 1861 and 1863 and were part of a series of 45 locomotives that SJ procured between 1856 and 1872.

The workshop was sold to Högbo AB in 1862 , which operated six smaller ironworks and had just acquired the Sandviken ironworks ( Sandvikens järnverk in Swedish ). Applications were sought for the Bessemerstahl produced there . Production under the name Nyköpings Mekaniska Verkstad continued until 1866.

In 1865 Nyköpings Mekaniska Verkstad was excluded from the delivery of locomotives to SJ due to repeated delays. Högbo AB went bankrupt in 1866 , Nyköpings Mekaniska Verkstad was closed and the inventory was sold for 99,000 Riksdaler . Most of the items went to Motala Verkstad .

The workshops included blast furnaces , a foundry , the shipyard and a mechanical workshop. A narrow-gauge railway was available for internal transport. After the closure , the buildings were initially used by a horseshoe nail factory and later by a furniture factory.
