Raul Augusto de Almeida Solnado (* 19th October 1929 in Lisbon , Portugal , † 8. August 2009 ) was a Portuguese comedian , who as theater -, film - and television - actor and humorist as the greatest comedian in Portugal in the 20th Century applies. He was also the director of several theaters and worked as a screenwriter and producer . Raul Solnado is considered one of the greats of Portuguese film and Portuguese culture.

Life

Raul Solnado was born to Virginia Augusta de Almeida and Bernardino Solnado. He was already on the theater stage in 1947, but only since his engagement at Cabaret Maxime in 1952 did he work professionally as an actor in various theaters. In 1956 he married the Brazilian actress Joselita Alvarenga , with whom he has two children. His son Mikkel Solnado comes from his marriage to a Danish woman , who became well known as a singer in Denmark with the group Gabriel Flies.

In 1962 Raul Solnado released a record with various sketches, which became the most successful record ever sold in Portugal. In 1969 he had his first comedy show Zip-Zip , which set the trend for Portuguese comedy and shaped generations of comedians after him.

In the 1960s and 1980s he was seen in important productions in various important theaters in Portugal, such as the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II in Lisbon. In 1964 he founded the Teatro Villaret , named after the actor João Villaret , of which he was director until 1970. In 1999 the Casa de Artistas was founded , and he remained its boss until his death in 2009.

His autobiography was published in 1991 under the title: A vida nao se perdeu .

On August 8, 2009, the comedian Solnado died in the Hospital de Santa Maria in Lisbon of complications from a heart disease and was buried at the Cemitério dos Olivais . Numerous Portuguese celebrities paid tribute to him and even the President of the Republic , Prof. Dr. Aníbal Cavaco Silva and Prime Minister José Sócrates paid tribute to him in official statements as the greatest comedian of Portuguese culture.

Solnado's work

Raul Solnado's career in theater, radio, cinema and television spanned over 60 years. He played in many films, made television games, was active on the radio and also had his own shows. In programs like Zip-Zip , A vista de Cornelia or Oresta de Sao Cantigas , he unfolded all his skills. His most important feature film as an actor was Ballad vom Hundestrand ( Balada da Praia dos Cães ) based on the novel by José Cardoso Pires . In the theater, plays by Agustina Bessa-Luís and other Portuguese playwrights were part of his repertoire.

As a comedian, he mainly targeted everyday life in Portugal.

Solnado has received the highest prizes available in Portugal. In 1982 he was awarded the Order of Infante Dom Henrique as an officer and in 2004 his Grand Cross .
