The Cabaret Maxime , also shortened Maxime , was a night club in Lisbon . It is located on Praça da Alegria square, not far from Avenida da Liberdade and Parque Mayer . In the vicinity is the Hot Clube de Portugal, the oldest still existing jazz club in Europe.

In its checkered history, the restaurant has long been considered a luxurious and sophisticated nightclub. So were u. a. the Spanish King Juan Carlos I and Charles Aznavour among his guests. Since the mid-2000s in particular, the maxim has become internationally known as a place to go out.

The maxim is not identical to Maxim's , a jazz club that existed from 1908 to 1940 at number 43 on Praça dos Restauradores .

history

The establishment opened in the 1940s, inspired by houses like the Moulin Rouge in Paris and spurred on by the growing number of international guests who have increasingly come to the capital of the neutral Portugal since the outbreak of World War II .

With the revue Sol da Meia-Noite , Raul Solnado and Tony de Matos began their careers as professional actors and singers here in 1952. Simone de Oliveira and Max were among the most famous Portuguese names who had engagements here in the 50s and 60s. After the Carnation Revolution in 1974, the club was increasingly forgotten. The Maxime later functioned as an erotic nightclub, in which prostitutes and their customers also frequented at times .

After the turn of the millennium, the Maxime experienced a new era as a pub for trend-conscious music lovers. The guests came from the city's fashion and designer scene , from student circles and from underground music culture. In the mid-2000s, a group around the well-known musician, artist, actor and eccentric presidential candidate Manuel João Vieira took over the restaurant, which reopened in 2006. As a result, the maxim was able to increase its popularity and offered a demanding daily program with live performances in various directions.

Unresolved official questions about renovations from the 1960s and 1970s and their subsequent legalization ultimately led to the end of the lease contract between the operators of the Maximes around Manuel João Vieira and the building owner, the real estate company Joing. On January 29, 2011, Cabaret Maxime closed with a closing party under the German-English motto Auf Wiedersehen Maxime Goodbye .

Maxime sur Mer

In the middle of 2015, Vieira announced that it wanted to reopen the Maxime. However, he did not move into the old premises, but converted an old warehouse on the Cais do Gás near the river in the style of the old Maxim. With the new, 800-seat venue, Vieira also wanted to close a gap in venues in the city between small clubs and larger halls that had emerged after the end of the Ritz Club and the old Maximes. On October 22, 2015, Vieira opened the new restaurant under the name Maxime sur Mer , with the opening party for the 2015 Doclisboa Film Festival. An official reopening is planned for November 2015.

Movie

The Portuguese director Bruno de Almeida shot Cabaret Maxime, a film that is freely reminiscent of Cabaret Maxim. The work was released in Portuguese cinemas on May 31, 2018 and featured a number of renowned actors, including Michael Imperioli , Ana Padrão , David Proval , John Ventimiglia , Mike Starr , Nick Sandow and Drena De Niro , and others. a. Manuel João Vieira, who was the last to lead the original Cabaret Maxime, also appears in a guest role as an eccentric singer.

The atmospheric film alludes to both the long tradition of the Maximes nightclub and classic gangster films, but its core theme is the increasing gentrification in Lisbon.
