James Michael Imperioli (born March 26, 1966 in Mount Vernon , New York ) is an American actor and screenwriter of Italian descent.

Life

Imperioli began his acting career in 1989 in The Knallharte Prinzipal . His third film was Martin Scorsese's Good Fellas - Three Decades in the Mafia - here he was given a supporting role as Spider . Later in the 1990s he worked in a total of five films by director Spike Lee, as well as in several Hollywood productions. He also wrote his first screenplay for Spike Lee's film Summer of Sam .

In 1999 he had his breakthrough as a Mafioso Christopher Moltisanti in the hit HBO - television series The Sopranos . Imperioli was given a leading role and starred in 80 of the 86 episodes between 1999 and 2007. For the role he won an Emmy Award and was twice nominated for the Golden Globe Award . He also wrote the script for five episodes of the series. In 2005 he was part of the cast of the television series Law & Order .

Throughout his film and television career, he remained loyal to the New York theater , both as an actor and as a writer. In 2004 he and his wife Victoria opened their own small theater in New York City - the "Studio Dante". In 2008 and 2009 he starred in the short-lived TV series Life on Mars , an American remake of the British series of the same name on ABC .

From 2010 to 2011 he played the lead role in the police drama Detroit 1-8-7 .

In Goodfellas , Joe Pesci as Mafioso shoots Thommy Michael Imperioli in the foot as a non-Mafia member. There is an ironic allusion to this scene in the Sopranos : This time the gangster Christopher shoots a civilian in the foot.

Imperioli has been married to Victoria Chlebowski since 1995, lives in New York City in the Tribeca neighborhood and has two children.

The Imperioli are students of the Tibetan Buddhism teacher Garchen Rinpoche. In his spare time Imperioli practiced Tae Kwon Do .
