action

The teenager Nicholas Borelli II lives with his parents in a typical small American town. His life turns out to be rather unexciting, especially since his parents are overcautious about germs and nutrition. He is supposed to spend the summer vacation in a math camp while his parents are on business in Papua New Guinea . However, the camp does not take place, so Nicholas spends the summer with his grandmother Tutti and his uncle Frankie in Brooklyn , New York City .

At first, Nicholas is overwhelmed by life in the big city. In addition, he doesn't dare to ask his uncle about his job, as his father had insisted on him to stay away from Frankie, who would not fit into the family. Nicholas makes contact with New York teenagers Donna and Tommy, who help him find his way around the metropolis. Over time, the evidence that Frankie works for the Mafia grows. When Nicholas takes a call on Frankie's private phone, he takes on an assignment for a certain Paulie that actually leads him into a mafia-like environment. He names himself Nicky Deuce . By chance, he gains some recognition within the gangster ring, which brings him further assignments. Meanwhile Nicky is sure that his uncle is also a mafioso, as the jobs were actually meant for him.

On one of these assignments, Nicky, Donna and Tommy discover that the gang of gangsters cheat on horse races on a large scale by conditioning their own racehorses using hypnosis and letting them start as outsiders. With a keyword the horse is "switched" in the race, wins the race and the gang around Paulie collects large amounts of money. The teenagers kidnap the racehorse, whereupon the gangsters kidnap Tutti. However, the exchange of the abductees negotiated by Nicky with the gang fails. Nicky, Donna, Tommy, Tutti, Frankie and Nicky's new parents are overwhelmed and tied up by the gangsters. They manage to free themselves, but they can no longer prevent the manipulated horse race.

When Paulie tries to pick up his winnings at the betting counter, Frankie reveals his true job: as an undercover agent for the New York City Police Department , he was smuggled into the gang to uncover their criminal machinations; the gang is caught red-handed and arrested.

reception

Common Sense Media , a US non-profit organization that rates films primarily on the basis of child-friendly and educational aspects, awarded Nicky Deuce four out of five stars and ruled:

"The story is a pleasant mixture of comedy, drama and good mood messages about the joys and sorrows of family life."

- Emily Ashby, Common Sense Media

The New York Daily News wrote of the film:

Nicky Deuce is a teenage film. He's not really subtle, which Gandolfini's "on-the-banana-peel slip" proves. It doesn't contain many surprises, and most of the characters are overly funny. But whatever? It's fun, it's silly, the kids are smart, and the adults are kind, if a little foolish at times. Two thumbs up for Nicky Deuce . "

- David Hinckley, New York Daily News

It was premiered in the United States and reached a total of 1.77 million viewers (ranked 10th on Monday, May 29, 2013). In the target group of 18 to 49 year olds, 433,000 viewers saw the film.

Shortly before the first broadcast on US television, the advocacy group Italian American One Voice Coalition called for a boycott of Nickelodeon and the film Nicky Deuce . According to the group, a "hurtful, stereotypical image of Italian-Americans as gangsters and criminals" would be presented. The group specifically appealed to parents not to let their children look at "this junk" and accused Nickelodeon of irresponsibility and targeted influence on children.
