Jim Carroll - In the Streets of New York is a 1995 American film directed by Scott Kalvert. It is based on the autobiographical novel In the Streets of New York ( The Basketball Diaries ) by Jim Carroll . Carroll, who processed his youth as a drug addict in the book, took on a small supporting role as drug addict Frankie Pinewater. The leading role of Jim Carroll is cast with Leonardo DiCaprio . Jim Carroll, a talented basketball player, cannot use his scholarship, his drug addiction is stronger.

Jim Carroll lives in a shabby neighborhood in New York . As a 13-year-old he received a scholarship from the renowned Catholic high school because of his basketball talent. But outside of the field of play, he and his friend Mickey become more and more addicted to drugs . Soon Jim Carroll's life will be all about drugs, sex , crime, and violence . His drug addiction leads to his expulsion from school and his mother throwing him out of their apartment. Nothing stands in the way of his social decline and so he and his friends keep slipping. He records all his experiences in his diaries , which will later help him to free himself from drugs.

History of origin

The film tells the true story of Jim Carroll (1949–2009). Jim was a drug addict in his youth and kept his experiences in his diaries. After getting rid of his drug addiction, Jim Carroll published his diaries in 1978 under the title The Basketball Diaries . This book was very successful.
