PJ Harvey
Polly Jean "PJ" Harvey MBE (* 9. October 1969 in Yeovil , Somerset ) is a British alternative - singer and songwriter .
Musical career
PJ Harvey began her musical career in the band Automatic Dlamini. A trio later formed under her name PJ Harvey. In 1992, the first joint album Dry appeared on the label Too Pure , with which the band attracted the attention of the independent scene.
In 1993 Harvey signed a contract with the record label Island Records . She then released two albums in quick succession, Rid of Me in the original line-up and, after Harvey decided to continue as a solo artist, the album 4-Track Demos . In the same year she toured in the opening act for U2 .
In 1995 her album To Bring You My Love was released , produced by John Parish and Flood . Parish and Harvey had previously worked together in the band Automatic Dlamini. In 1996, the multi-instrumentalist and producer and PJ Harvey co-launched Dance Hall at Louse Point . On Nick Caves - with whom she had a relationship in the 1990s - album Murder Ballads (1996) PJ Harvey is represented as a duet partner with Henry Lee . She is also a guest singer on Tricky's album Angels with Dirty Faces (1998) on the song Broken Homes .
With their follow-up album Is This Desire? (1998) she was unable to match the success of To Bring You My Love with either the critics or the record buyers . In 1999, Harvey reunited with her old bandmates. Together they recorded the album Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea (2000) in Dorset and New York City . For this album, on which Thom Yorke ( Radiohead ) is also a guest singer, PJ Harvey was awarded the 2001 Mercury Music Prize . PJ Harvey is a guest singer and musician on Sparklehorse 's album It's a Wonderful Life (2001) .
In 2003 she was invited to Rancho De La Luna, where she worked with Josh Homme and other artists on the Desert Sessions Volumes 9 & 10. In May 2004 the album Uh Huh Her was released , stylistically following Harvey's earlier albums. In addition, she was also on the 2004 album Bubblegum by Mark Lanegan represented. Here she provided the voice for the songs Hit the City and Come to Me . In 2005 she worked on the album Before the Poison by Marianne Faithfull , which also includes the song No Child of Mine .
With the elegiac album White Chalk , which was released in September 2007, Harvey decided not to use the electric guitar , which had been the dominant guitar until then . Instead, she was accompanied exclusively by acoustic instruments - mainly the piano - and her voice was usually one pitch higher.
On March 30, 2009, the album A Woman a Man Walked By was released, which Harvey has again recorded in collaboration with John Parish. The British artist's eighth solo album, Let England Shake , was released in February 2011. PJ Harvey was awarded the Mercury Music Prize for the second time. Numerous magazines voted Let England Shake album of the year.
In addition to her job as a musician, PJ Harvey appeared as Mary Magdalene in Hal Hartley's feature film The Book of Life . She also studied at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London and works as a sculptor . In June 2013 she was awarded the MBE for her services to music . Queen Elizabeth II presented her with the medal on December 10, 2013 at Buckingham Palace . Her ninth solo album, The Hope Six Demolition Project , was released in April 2016 .
In 2019 she composed the film music of the same name for a theater adaptation of the Noël Coward Theater , directed by Ivo van Hove, of the classic film Alles über Eva , in which the leading actresses Gillian Anderson and Lily James can each be heard as guest singers with a song.
