style
Harvey named artists such as The Doors , The Pogues and The Velvet Underground as musical influences . The Rolling Stone describes the sound of the album as "Somewhere between inclined folk, ethereal New Wave and Patti Smith - Elegy " . For the first time PJ Harvey uses saxophones on an album; In addition, instruments such as autoharp or zither , mellotron and xylophone are often used. The song England even contains a sample of Iraqi music.
“The beat strategy of John Parish with his less is more fits here just as perfectly as his voice to Mick Harvey's […] and both voices, as great counterattackers, fit perfectly to Harvey's vocals, which are less multiple than before, but could still belong to several people at the same time. In this way, "Let England shake" fully exploits its potential on the one hand, but on the other hand overstimulates it in part also downright pleasurable. "
In terms of content, she “ goes to court with her homeland, sings of senseless wars in distant countries, of false patriotism and national identity” ; but also stressed that she “did not want to write cheap, denouncing protest songs” and that England was only a “placeholder for every country” .
