Desert Sessions is a collaborative music project founded by Josh Homme and Brant Bjork .
history
After Kyuss broke up in 1996, Josh Homme founded the "Desert Sessions" project with Brant Bjork in 1997. Homme later took over the sole organization and management of the sessions, as Bjork dedicated himself to his solo career. A few musicians from different bands, mainly from the Palm Desert Scene , were invited to play music together for a few days. Since there were no fixed structures and there was a lot of improvisation, both organizationally and musically, the Desert Sessions could also be described as a jam project. The venue for the project was the Rancho De La Luna Studio in Joshua Tree, California . In 2003 the tenth part of the Desert Sessions series was published, in 2019 the eleventh and twelfth parts were published. The first six were released on individual records (10 ″), parts 7 & 8 and 9 & 10 on a double record.
Most of the musicians invited by Homme could be assigned to the Palm Desert scene. Among them were Brant Bjork , Dave Catching, Nick Oliveri , Mark Lanegan , John McBain , Josh Freese , Chris Goss , Alain Johannes , Dean Ween. While the first Desert Sessions were almost exclusively instrumental and based on classic stoner rock , in parts 9 & 10 with PJ Harvey or Twiggy Ramirez musicians also appeared who did not belong to the environment of the Palm Desert Scene.
Josh Homme's band Queens of the Stone Age later emerged from the Desert Sessions .
