Jesse "The Devil" Hughes (born September 24, 1972 in Greenville , South Carolina ) is an American musician , known as the front man of the Californian rock band Eagles of Death Metal . He also started a solo project with Boots Electric in 2011.

youth

When he was seven years old, Hughes' mother moved him to Palm Desert , California. In high school , he befriended Josh Homme (later a member of Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age ). Hughes graduated from Greenville Technical College with a degree in journalism and worked for several years as the manager of a "Video Depot" in Palm Desert.

Boots Electric

On September 20, 2011, Hughes released a solo album entitled Honkey Kong under the pen name Boots Electric . The first single was the song Boots Electric Theme , on which Brody Dalle can also be heard. The German music portal laut.de chose the accompanying video, in which Hughes satirized various well-known films, as video of the year 2011.

Political position

Hughes worked as a speechwriter and activist for the Republican Party , and he also worked for former MP Sonny Bono . He sees himself as belonging to the extreme right wing of the Republicans and to this day defends George W. Bush and his war against Iraq . He called the American President Barack Obama a "communist cocksucker". He is also a registered member of the NRA .

Even after the terrorist attacks on November 13, 2015 in Paris , in which an Eagles of Death Metal concert in the Bataclan concert hall in Paris was the target, Hughes advocates that everyone should have access to weapons. As long as the world is not weapon-free, everyone should have one. Hughes openly appears as a pro-life representative and suspected in an interview published on May 14, 2016 that the security guards at Bataclan had supported the terrorists on the evening of the terrorist attack in Paris. This triggered reactions, including from fans.

style

Hughes describes Little Richard as his greatest musical influence and inspiration.
