Kyuss ['kaɪ.əs] was a stoner rock band from Palm Desert , California . The band is considered the founder of the genre and was at the same time a role model for numerous other stoner rock bands. Since the sound did not fit into any existing category, the band described it themselves as "desert rock " (English: desert rock , now synonymous with stoner rock). Style-defining were among other things lower-pitched guitars. Sometimes even played through bass amplifiers.

Band history

The band began in 1988 under the name "Katzenjammer", changed it in 1989 to "Sons of Kyuss" and in 1991 to "Kyuss". The first demo album was released under the band name Sons of Kyuss. The band was named after a gloomy witcher from the " Dungeons & Dragons " role-playing background " Greyhawk ". At first she played mainly at the “generator parties” (initiated by Josh Homme's circle of friends), which took place in the desert off Palm Desert and which quickly became famous. The name of the party comes from the fact that the electricity for the plant in the desert had to be supplied by generator sets. The fact that the performances took place at the gates of the city was due to the fact that a lot of old people live in Palm Desert and the very loud concerts in the city would have led to complaints.

The starting line-up was: John Garcia (vocals), Josh Homme (lead guitar), Nick Oliveri (rhythm guitar), Chris Cockrell (bass) and Brant Bjork (drums). During the recording of the demo EP Sons of Kyuss , Oliveri left the band, after the release, Oliveri took Cockrell's position on bass and shortly afterwards recorded their first album Wretch with his bandmates , which largely consists of new recordings of their demo songs. This early work is characterized above all by a high proportion of Doom riffs, paired with elements of Psychedelic Rock and is assigned to the Stoner Doom . Already in a short time the already groove- oriented Kyuss deleted large parts of the heavy and raw metal and thus shaped the stoner rock of the Palm Desert scene . In 1992 Kyuss released their second album Blues for the Red Sun , which was produced by Chris Goss ( Masters of Reality ) and gave them their breakthrough from the underground scene. The latter was to support the band from now on in all projects, which in the opinion of many critics also manifested itself in the sound of the following albums. After the release of Blues for the Red Sun Oliveri left the band again and for good and was replaced by Scott Reeder . In 1993 the band played the follow-up Welcome to Sky Valley , but was only able to release it in 1994 because the record label caused problems. It was the last album on which drummer Brant Bjork was involved, who had already chosen a successor in Alfredo Hernández . With this last line-up, they went on tour with the album Welcome to Sky Valley before retiring to the studio to produce a sequel. In mid-1995, their last album, … And the Circus Leaves Town , was released before the band separated in October 1995. After the breakup, a split EP with Queens of the Stone Age , Josh Homme's new band, and a best-of album were released.

John Garcia with Kyuss Lives! at the Eurockéennes de Belfort 2011

After the breakup in 1995, John Garcia took part in countless other Stoner projects and released a four-track EP (Special Edition: plus five bonus tracks ) of his own project, Slo Burn . Garcia then sang in the band Unida, which has released an album. A second album by the band Unida was completed, but never released. Garcia is currently singing in the band Hermano , which released their second album in 2004 and their third album in 2007. Parts of the band (especially the songwriter and guitarist Josh Homme) were later reorganized to form the Queens of the Stone Age , who also achieved commercial success. After leaving the band in 1994, drummer Brant Bjork devoted himself to other music projects. He played drums with Fu Manchu from 1997 to 2001 and started his solo career in 1999, which has resulted in nine studio albums so far.

In February 2010 it was announced that singer John Garcia will perform live with Bruno Fevery (guitar), Jacques de Haard (bass) and Rob Snijders (drums) under the motto Garcia Plays Kyuss . By voting on Garcia's personal MySpace page, fans were allowed to determine which songs should be played.

In 2011 John Garcia, Nick Oliveri and Brant Bjork went on tour with the support of Bruno Fevery on guitar under the new band name Kyuss Lives! . However, due to a legal dispute with Homme, they had to change their name to Vista Chino at the end of 2012 .
