Herzogenreuth (dialect: Herzareud) is a parish village in Franconian Switzerland with 162 inhabitants and part of the Markt Heiligenstadt in Upper Franconia .

Herzogenreuth is at 556  m above sea level. NN the highest village in the Bamberg district and is located northeast of the Geisberg . Here on the plateaus of the Jura you have a view of the Fichtel Mountains in good weather .

Townscape

With its Romanesque choir tower and the cemetery wall, which is more than a meter thick, the church of St. Nicholas still looks like a village castle.

history

The first documentary mention comes from the year 1255, when the Bamberg bishop pledged the village of Herzogengeriuth to Chunemund von Giech for 150  silver marks .

On May 1, 1978, the previously independent community was incorporated into the Heiligenstadt market in Upper Franconia.

Old descriptions

In Biedermann's topographical description from 1752, Herzogenreuth is described as follows:

“Herzogenreuth, a village with a Catholic church on the heights below the Scheßlitz office, 4 hours from the residence, whose teams are partly responsible for the bishopric and partly for the venerable cathedral chapter in Bamberg. The church, called St. Nikolai, is a branch of Tiefenbelz and is ordered the third Sunday at any time. "
