history

Surname

Originally, Oberngrub was just called the pit. The current name means village above Burggrub , from where it was probably founded. The first permanent settlement should have emerged in the 11th century.

Modern times

On December 2, 1852, the Bamberger Tagblatt and the Fränkische Merkur reported that all the local residents of Oberngrub wanted to sell their properties in order to emigrate to America. Thereupon the government demanded an immediate investigation from the district court, because such a migration could not be afforded, since the example could set an example. The mayor was invited to Bamberg to report. However, this did not appear immediately, but only in the course of December and stated that the sterility of the soil and the lack of meadows and litter were the cause of the dissatisfaction of the residents of his place. Given the small number of livestock, the yield set in the cadastre would be far too high. One cannot bear the tax burden.

The authorities did not take these reports seriously, but at least the land rate was waived and a one-off school fee subsidy of 50 guilders was granted. The numerous requests to emigrate show that individuals gradually sought their happiness in the New World.

On May 1, 1978, the previously independent community was incorporated into the Heiligenstadt market in Upper Franconia.

Topographic description (1752)

Stauffenberg is the village and community ruler from Burggrub Castle, whether he has any subjects there, and also practices high and low hunting.
