Tiefenellern was an independent municipality until 1978 and has been part of the municipality of Litzendorf in the Bamberg district in Bavaria with around 210 inhabitants since the municipal reform .

Melting snow on the Ellerbach

The place is at the beginning of the Ellertal on Ellerberg, the ascent to Franconian Switzerland . Neighboring towns are Lohndorf , Neudorf , Herzogenreuth and Laibarös .

history

The village is known to archaeologists because of the Jungfernhöhle , a Stone Age cult site in the forest.

A place called "Elern" was mentioned in a document from 1137. It could be Burgellern . The places Tiefenellern and Hohenellern were first mentioned in 1308, when Friedrich von Truhendingen ceded them together with other properties to the diocese of Bamberg .

On May 1, 1978, the previously independent community of Tiefenellern was dissolved and incorporated into Litzendorf.

Attractions

The sights of the village include the Jungfernhöhle and the Ellerberg. In the 1960s and 1970s, car and motorcycle races took place on the serpentines of the Ellerberg. The village image is dominated by the Eulenstein (also Eulenwand, dialect: Eulnstaa)

The Fränkische Strasse der Skulpturen between Tiefenellern and the neighboring village of Lohndorf is well worth seeing .

economy

The medium-sized Hönig brewery is located in the village .
