The church village lies on the edge of the main moor forest and is a preferred place of residence for commuters due to its proximity to the city of Bamberg . The proximity to the main moor forest was the reason for the threat from wolves, which remained acute into the 17th century.

history

Translation of the document with the first mention of Pödeldorf

" It should be made known to all Christian believers, both present and future, how Arnold, the son of Wicker von Langheim, has exchanged the estate that Herr Dieterich owned for his estate Langenroth (Roth near Lichtenfels) and Gorasade (Görau near Weismain) gave to the brothers of the Bamberg church, that is, the fourth part of the city of Kunstadt (Burgkunstadt) and also other things, which due to the inheritance right after the death of Adelbert, the count of this city, owned. The same Arnold has the fief of Altendorf (near Weismain)
That he owned and the only Buchendorf estate (departed Weismain), which he had returned to Bishop Rupert, he gave to these brothers as a fief. Witnesses are: Kacelin, provost; Eberhard, dean; Wolfram Graf. Your delegation was present it was confirmed by Provost Egilbert and Dean Albert with the consent of the brothers. The
following lay people were also present: Arnold von Sichendorf (Seigendorf), Regil von Wilhernmsdorf ( near Langenzenn), Herrant and his son Herrant von Visepach (mgl. Fischbach or Weißenbach), Arnold von Bolenze (Pölz = Tiefenpölz), Hermann von Gremisdorf (Gremsdorf)
Rateloch von Bodelendorf (Pödeldorf) , Gundeloch von Oberstenfeld (Obristenfeld near Burgkunstadt, Diebrecht) from Autenhausen (possibly Altenhausen), Bern von Suarzaha ( Schwarzach), Lovitolf von Weisendorf.
This was negotiated on the 8th day of the Ides of August in Bamberg Abbey. Count Heinrich von Stollburg and Otto von Abenberg took part.
In order that this document remains undamaged (undisputed), the convent of the brothers ordered that it be confirmed with its seal. This was negotiated in the year 1096 of the birth of the Lord on the Ides of August. (With Roman date counting it would have to be August 8th 1096)
"

On May 1, 1978, the previously independent municipality of Pödeldorf was dissolved and incorporated into Litzendorf.

Surname

The name of the place probably goes back to a Slavic founder named Bodelo. The first documentary mention was in 1145, when a Gundeloch of Boudelnorf is mentioned.

The name Pödeldorf, which has repeatedly been spelled differently over the centuries and also dependent on the customs of the document makers at the time to express oneself phonetically, has always remained recognizable. The first document that Rateloch de bodelendorf mentions is likely to trace the place name back to the village of Bodilo (Potilo, a Germanic minor god). The origin of this village ending settlement can be assumed to be in the 8th and 9th centuries.

Notable Slavic settlement is not accepted by chroniclers, and the place name is probably not of Slavic origin, but the Slavic settlers lived in very small communities and used the forest for pasture, so that Slavic residents of Pödeldorf are quite possible in front of Rateloch. Until 1406 Pödeldorf belonged to the area of the parish Amlingstadt, whose church is one of the Slavic churches from the time of Charlemagne's Slavic mission .
