Melkendorf (Litzendorf)
Melkendorf is a district of the municipality of Litzendorf in the Upper Franconian district of Bamberg with 760 inhabitants.
history
Melkendorf was first mentioned in a document on December 16, 1279 in a document from Friedrich von Truhendingen , who sold the village of "Meilkendorf" to the Langheim monastery for 64 pounds of Heller for lack of money , subject to a right of repurchase. This happened under the reign of King Rudolf von Habsburg (1273–1291).
His widow Agnes confirmed this transfer to Giech at the castle on April 13, 1290 after the Langheim abbot Hartmann had bought the village of Melchindorf for 105 pounds hellers from the creditors.
In 1921 the foundation stone for the church , the branch church St. Joseph, was laid, which was consecrated two years later.
In 1914 construction began on the school house. The school opened in September 1915. The price of the building was 30,000 marks.
Melkendorf was taken by the Americans in the last days of the Second World War , on April 13, 1945 at 9:30 a.m.
On May 1, 1978, the previously independent community of Melkendorf was dissolved and incorporated into Litzendorf.
Singing memorial
On the Hahnberg stands the Melkendorf singing memorial of the Franconian Singing Association , which was inaugurated on July 26, 1954.
It consists of twelve sand-lime brick pillars and is the only memorial for singers in Germany. The columns are four meters high and grouped around a sarcophagus-like altar.
