Masters of Reality is an American rock band . You are considered to be one of the most important pioneers and inspirers of stoner rock .

history

The Masters of Reality was founded in Syracuse (New York) in 1981 , the only members initially being high school friends Chris Goss and Tim Harrington . Before they adopted the name Masters of Reality, which they borrowed from Black Sabbath's third album , they called themselves “Manson Family” for a long time. Around 1985 two keyboard players were hired, Mr. Owl and Googe. In the following years they appeared in many clubs in the vicinity. In order to stay afloat, the members first had to work in numerous part-time jobs.

In 1988 a demo tape of the Masters came into the hands of Rick Rubin . He produced the group so that they could release their self-titled debut (which is also known as The Blue Garden due to the almost legendary fold-out cover ) on Rubin's newly founded label Def American . Since Rick Rubin didn't like keyboards, main keyboardist Mr. Owl left the band, Googe switched to bass, and Vincent "Vinnie" Ludovico was hired as drummer. Mr. Owl still played the intro to z. B. Kill the King on the debut and is still listed under the credits of the record. Soon afterwards, Chris Goss and Googe separated from the other two members. They also switched to the hip-hop label Delicous Vinyl , on which their debut album was re-released in 1990, this time with a different track order and the addition of the song Doraldina's Prophecies . Harrington and Ludovico formed the rock group Bogeymen .

During this time, Chris Goss met drumming legend Ginger Baker , a former cream drummer , and got him to drum for the Masters. However, it took three years for the album Sunrise on the Sufferbus to appear, this time on Baker's Chrysalis label . Chris Goss also began producing several bands around this time, including three Kyuss albums . The Masters themselves, however, became increasingly quiet. The 1994 album The Ballad of Jody Frosty was never released, but numerous songs found their way onto later albums by the band.

In 1997 the Masters emerged from oblivion and played a few concerts in the Viper Room in Los Angeles, with Scott Weiland , singer of the Stone Temple Pilots , as a guest musician. The live recordings of these performances were released on the legendary album How High the Moon (which was reissued in 2001 under the name Reality Show ).

Only five years after Sunrise on the Sufferbus did the band's third studio album, Welcome to the Western Lodge , appear in 1999 , this time on Chris Goss' own label Brownhouse . The band's lineup had changed so often in the meantime that only Chris Goss himself remained of the original line-up. From a group with permanent members who had played in the same constellation for eight years, the project of a single man had developed who works with constantly changing guest musicians (among them, for example, the Queens of the Stone Age members Josh Homme, Nick Olivieri and Mark Lanegan or Nine-Inch-Nails bassist Twiggy Ramirez). In addition, Goss continued his work as a producer intensively, including for Soulwax , the Queens of the Stone Age or the Kyuss successor Slo Burn .

In 2001 the album Deep in the Hole was released , the live recording of the subsequent European tour followed in 2002 under the title Flak 'n' Flight .

First released in 2004 under the name Chris Goss / Masters of Reality , Give Us Barrabas is a collection of many unreleased songs, some of which were over 20 years old at the time of publication.

The Masters of Reality have retreated to the studio in January 2008 (Rancho de la Luna) to the official successor to Pine / Cross Dover by Deep in the Hole einzuspielen (2001).
