... And the Circus Leaves Town is the fourth studio album by the American stoner rock band Kyuss . It was released on July 11, 1995 via Elektra Records . It is the band's last official studio album.

Origin and style

The album was recorded in March 1995 at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys , California . While the band used to only use older amplifiers from the 1970s, this time, according to Josh Homme , newer Marshall amplifiers were also used as overdubs . These would have "an excellent sound, so why shouldn't we use them now and then?"

The original plan was to record the album in the Rhineland, Germany, but the band found “a closer location”, a small studio near the Joshua Tree National Monument . The band wanted to escape modern high-end studios. Friends of the band who brought their own equipment also stopped by for the recordings. Josh Homme spoke of a "cool project". Sometimes you felt "like in a freaky old desert house". Musically, the record ties in with the bass-heavy stoner rock of the previous albums, where instrumental pieces such as Jumbo Blimp Jumbo were also recorded. The only single One Inch Man was released. Only a few months after the album was released, the band broke up in October 1995.

reception

Thomas Kupfer wrote in Rock Hard , with ... And the Circus Leaves Town send the band to top the "Masterpiece" Welcome to Sky Valley ", although they did not make the mistake of writing 'Sky Valley, Part II' . “Copper awarded nine out of ten points. At Allmusic , Tom Demalon thought the album was “not a bad record” and bore the “unique stamp” of Kyuss. Nevertheless, it is “a little disappointing”. It awarded three out of five stars. In the list of "150 albums for eternity" by Visions magazine , the album is ranked 86th.
