Yawning Man is an American rock band that was formed in 1986 in California , USA . She is considered one of the founders of Desert Rock and became known well before the release of the first studio album in 2005 through so-called generator parties . Yawning Man almost completely dispenses with vocals, bassist Mario Lalli can only be heard as singer on a few older pieces.

Band history

Yawning Man was founded in 1986 by guitarists Gary Arce and Dino Lalli, Lalli's cousin Mario Lalli on electric bass and drummer Alfredo Hernández . Gary Arce and Mario Lalli had their roots in the punk scene. The quartet lived in a house in La Quinta in southern California that belonged to Mario Lalli's parents. The band name Yawning Man is the name of a character from the movie The Little Thumble . The musicians attended concerts together in Los Angeles , where they met the filmmaker and musician Dave Travis. This appeared one day in La Quinta with some friends and a power generator, which for the band the initial spark for the so-called generator parties (German Generator - Party ) showed. Travis then regularly drove the band and their equipment to the Californian desert on weekends, where Yawning Man gave concerts with the help of the generator, which attracted up to 500 people. The group recorded dozens of low-fidelity tracks , some of which were released in 1986 as the demo The Birth of Sol .

In the early 1990s, the band took a long break. Drummer Hernandez played from 1994 first with Kyuss , later with Queens of the Stone Age , Mario and Dino Lalli founded Fatso Jetson and Gary Arce played first with Ten East and later with his own band Dark Tooth Encounter. In 2002 the quartet got together again to begin work on the first studio album Rock Formations , which was finally released in 2005 on the Spanish label Alone Records. Other albums followed, on which numerous guest musicians took part, including Mathias Schneeberger (keyboards), Sara Ryan (violin) and Adolofo Trepiana ( bandoneon ). Yawning Man has been an instrumental band since 2015 with the line-up of Gary Arce (guitar), Mario Lalli (bass) and Bill Stinson (drums).

Style and meaning

With the exception of a few older recordings, the music of Yawning Man is purely instrumental with a psychedelic mood carried by melancholy . The sound is described as atmospheric, the online magazine laut.de compares it to a "sunrise in Death Valley" and describes Yawning Man in an album review of The Revolt Against Tired Noises as the founding fathers of the Desert Rock style . The 16-year-old Brant Bjork and friends saw Yawning Man several times at their generator parties, which according to his own statements inspired him to found the band Kyuss . Kyuss covered the instrumental Catamaran on her 1995 album … And the Circus Leaves Town . The music magazine Metal Hammer writes that although Kyuss are the fathers of stoner rock, Yawning Man should be considered the grandfathers of this style. Yawning Man guitarist Mario Lalli was at the center of the Desert Rock movement, and guitarist Josh Homme counts him among his style-defining role models.
