Brant Bjork (born March 19, 1973 ) is an American rock musician , record producer and head of a record label . As the drummer of the bands Kyuss and Fu Manchu, he became a style-defining musician of stoner rock , before he started his solo career in 1999, which made him known outside of the stoner rock scene.

Life

As a founding member and songwriter of the Stoner-Rock founder Kyuss, he left the band in 1993 after the third official album Welcome to Sky Valley and produced Fu Manchu's debut album No One Rides for Free in the same year . In 1997 he joined Fu Manchu as a drummer and released several albums with the band until 2001. Before that, he initiated the Desert Sessions in 1996 together with ex-Kyuss colleague Josh Homme , from which the Queens of the Stone Age and Eagles of Death Metal emerged .

He began his solo career by founding his own record label Duna Records (initially titled El Camino ) and releasing his first solo album Jalamanta on Man's Ruin Records . So he played all the instruments (bass, drums, guitar) on Jalamanta himself. He was only supported with the vocals by Mario Lalli (from Fatso Jetson ), who was also responsible for some guitar tracks.

The following project Ché brought him back to "more familiar" stoner rock for the time being. So he teamed up with his successor to the Kyuss drums, Alfredo Hernández (including Queens of the Stone Age) and the Unida bassist Dave Dinsmore and released the album Sounds of Liberation in 2000 . However, this should remain the only sign of life from Ché and Bjork devoted himself again to his solo project, with which he followed up with the second album Brant Bjork & the Operators in 2002 . Contrary to the title, he played all the instruments himself again and was only supported by Mathias Schneeberger on the electric organ . In terms of style, Bjork moved even more away from "classic" stoner rock and created a mix of styles with jazz , dub and reggae elements.

The 2003 album Keep Your Cool (2003) was rockier again with influences from Jimi Hendrix , while Local Angel , released in 2004 with many acoustic songs, is the quietest album so far.

On August 1, 2005, the double album Saved by Magic was released on Duna Records , with Bjork recording all songs with his live band, the Bros ( Brant Bjork & The Bros ).

In 2007 the album Somera Sól was released . It is stylistically similar to the "classic" Stoner Rock of earlier times, when Brant Bjork was still playing in his band project Ché. Alfredo Hernández is on the drums, and Mario Lalli from Fatso Jetson appears again .

In April 2008, the solo album - "Punk Rock Guilt" was released. This time on his also new label "Low Desert Punk", which is named after a title by "Jalamanta".

In March 2010 his album was released: Gods & Goddesses (Low Desert Punk / Cargo Records)

Between 2011 and 2014 Brant Bjork played drums in Vista Chino , where he played Kyuss' songs and his own compositions together with Kyuss founding member John Garcia .

In autumn 2014 he was touring Europe solo.
