Fu Manchu is a stoner rock band from California. The band recorded a relatively large number of line-up changes in their early days, with Scott Hill only remaining from the original line-up. The line-up has remained constant since Scott Reeder joined the company in 2001.

Band history

The band was founded in 1987 as a hardcore band under the name Virulence . Her early style was influenced by Black Flag and Bl'ast .

The first single, Kept Between Trees , on which Scott Hill has not yet sung, was released in 1990 on Slap-a-Ham Records. In 1992, the second single Senioritis was released on Zuma Records . In the same year the singles Pick Up Summer and Don't Bother Knockin 'were released by Elastic Records . The vocals on these singles came from Scott Hill, with Glen Chivens and Greg McCaughey, who was replaced by Mark Abshire on bass, left the band. In addition, Scott Votaw, a second guitarist, joined the band, who was replaced by Eddi Glass after the singles were released. The band's first album, No One Rides For Free , was released on Bong Load Custom in 1994 and was produced by then Kyuss drummer Brant Bjork .

In 1995 Mark Abshire was replaced by Brad Davis and the album Daredevil was released. The following album In Search of ... was recorded in this line-up.

Due to the increasing popularity and, in their opinion, too strong a rock orientation of the band, Ruben Romano (replaced by ex-Kyuss drummer Brant Bjork) and Eddie Glass (replaced by Bob Balch) left the band and founded Psychedelic Rock with Mark Abshire -Band Nebula .

In 1997 the Godzilla EP was released without a new lead guitarist. So Hill played both guitars himself, as lead guitarist under the pseudonym "Mike Cooper-Smith". The recordings of this session were later released with the "Eatin 'dust" recordings as "Eatin' dust".

In 1997 Fu Manchu released the album The Action is Go . A music video was recorded for the first track Evil Eye . In 1998 a compilation of old songs was published under the title Return to Earth 91-93 , which previously could only be found on singles that were long out of print.

The studio album King of the Road, produced by Joe Barresi ( Queens of the Stone Age ), followed in autumn 1999 . The album Eatin 'Dust was released shortly afterwards . After completing the follow-up album California Crossing in 2001, drummer Brant Bjork left the band to devote himself to solo projects and was replaced by Scott Reeder (not to be confused with the ex- Kyuss bassist of the same name ) on the upcoming tour for the new album . Since then the line-up has been constant. On this tour, the recordings for the double live album Go for It… Live! made.

After the single Something Beyond was released in the winter of 2003 , the album Start the Machine was released the following summer (2004) .

On February 16, 2007, their tenth studio album We Must Obey was released by Century Media . It was recorded in the Grandmasters Recorders Studio in Hollywood, where Tool and Nine Inch Nails also recorded albums.

On October 10th, 2009 “Signs of Infinite Power” was released, produced by Sergio Chavez.

style

The music played by Fu Manchu can be assigned to stoner rock . The guitar riffs are mostly simple, but a punchy guitar sound, often paired with slower, viscous rhythms, is characteristic of their music. Your style is u. a. influenced by rock groups such as Black Sabbath , Blue Cheer and Led Zeppelin , but also by hardcore bands from the 1980s and the Californian skater and surfer scene since the 1970s (see also Dogtown ). The band's lyrics are often about films from the 1970s, mostly so-called B-movies , Southern California and life there, skateboards, surfing, cars and driving, women, paranormal phenomena such as B. UFOs and the Bigfoot , poker games and band internals.
