Johann Nepomuk von Harrach
Johann Nepomuk Graf von Harrach (Czech Jan Nepomuk z Harrachu ; born November 2, 1828 in Vienna , † December 12, 1909 ibid) was an Austrian industrialist , politician , landlord and patron of art and science in Bohemia .
Life
Johann Nepomuk came from the noble family von Harrach , was a son of Franz Ernst Graf von Harrach (born December 13, 1799, † February 26, 1884 in Nice ), a major industrialist of damask and canvas weaving in Janowitz (Rymarov), founder of Franz-Ernst -Hütte of the Altendorf ironworks (Römerstadt district), and grandson of Ernst Christoph Graf von Harrach (* May 29, 1757 - December 13, 1838), owner of Janowitz, a brother of the doctor and Johanniters Karl Borromäus Graf von Harrach (1761– 1829). On August 2, 1856, he married Maria Margarethe von Lobkowitz for the first time ; in 2nd marriage Maria Theresia von Thurn and Taxis (* March 7, 1856 in Prague, † July 20, 1908 in Bruck an der Leitha), last chief stewardess of Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary .
Johann Nepomuk Graf von Harrach had been a member of the army since the revolution of 1848/1849 in the Austrian Empire and fought against the rebels in Hungary , after 1855 after his resignation he became administrator of his large estate in Puchlowitz ( Puchlovice ) (Königgrätz district), and since 1861 president of Königgrätzer and Tschaslauer, since 1869 also of the Tabor district association and in 1865 member of the Bohemian state parliament. In addition to his numerous activities in cultural life, he was elected to the Reichsrat in 1870 , was a member of the Reichsrat for the rural communities of Königgrätz , Jermer , Náchod , Opočno , Böhmisch Skalitz and Neustadt from 1873 to 1885 and a hereditary member of the Herrenhaus (Austria) since 1884 . From 1879 in the Old Czech Club in Vienna, he promoted Kasimir Felix Badeni as Prime Minister of the Austrian part of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy , who sought to defuse the conflicts in the multi-ethnic state in his language ordinance of 1890; Count Harrach tried to achieve a conservative German-Czech balance.
After the electoral success of the Young Czechs , Count Johann Nepomuk von Harrach withdrew from political life and vigorously promoted Czech cultural life. He was chairman of the Association for the Development of the National Theater in Prague and offered prizes to support the Czech opera. He was also a member of the board of trustees of Matice česká , wrote books and worked for several years as a director of the Slavie Bank.
He found his final resting place in the Harrach tomb of the Holy Cross in Horní Branná .
