The Praça dos Restauradores [ ˈpɾasɐ duʃ ʁɯʃtauɾɐˈdoɾɯʃ ] ( Eng. Square of the Restorers ) is an inner-city square in Lisbon , between Rossio and Avenida da Liberdade .

The square serves to commemorate the restoration of independence in 1640 after 60 years of rule by the Spaniards. The obelisk in the middle of the square, inaugurated in 1886, bears the names and dates of the battles fought during the Portuguese War of Restoration . António Tomás da Fonseca designed the monument, Simões de Almeida and Alberto Nunes in turn created the statues next to it, which are supposed to represent "independence" and "victory".

Facade of the former Teatro Éden

The rectangular square is surrounded by numerous buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries. The most famous are the Palácio Foz , an 18th century palace with numerous decorated interiors, and the Teatro Éden , a former large cinema from 1931, which today houses a hotel behind its Art Deco facade created by Cassiano Branco . Also worth mentioning is the Condes Cinema , designed in 1950 by Raul Tojal in a modernist style, which is operated by the Lisbon Hard Rock Cafe .

Below the square is a metro station of the same name on the blue line.
