José Cardoso Pires

José Cardoso Pires (born October 2, 1925 in São João do Peso , Portugal, † October 26, 1998 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese writer who worked primarily as a novelist .

Life

Cardoso Pires came from a middle class family, his father was a member of the merchant fleet of Portugal. He studied mathematics , was editor-in-chief of the daily Diário de Lisboa from 1969 to 1972 and taught Portuguese literature at King's College in London .

His satire on the dictator Salazar Dinossauro Excelentíssimo (1972) was first printed by publishers in the GDR. His 1982 novel Balada da Praia dos Cães was awarded in 1987 by the Portuguese Association of Authors APE, and in the same year its film adaptation ( Ballad from the Dog Beach ) by director José Fonseca e Costa premiered.

In 1989 he received the Order of Merit and in 1997 the highest Portuguese literary prize , the Prémio Pessoa.

Several of his works have been translated into German.
