Ballad from the dog beach (original title: Balada da Praia dos Cães ) is a feature film by the Portuguese director José Fonseca e Costa from 1987 . It is based on José Cardoso Pires ' novel of the same name from 1982.

action

On the beach of Praia do Guincho, wild dogs scratched the dead body of an officer of the Portuguese Armed Forces in the early 1960s . It is the body of Captain Dantas, a revolutionary opposition activist who was wanted by the political police of the Estado Novo regime since he escaped from the prison of Elvas fortress , together with two comrades and with the help of one unknown woman.

The secret police immediately move the case off so as not to suspect political murder from public opinion , and the criminal police are entrusted with solving the case. The reliable inspector Elias Santana, who moved from the conservative north to sinful Lisbon, but who has since become illusionary, receives the case. In the course of his investigation, the opaque explosiveness and the political implications of the case quickly become clear to him. The key to the case is the mysterious, idealistic Mena, the presumed lover of the murdered Dantas. However, the calm inspector threatens to succumb to their fascination.

The film plot unfolds between the lives of the fugitives shown in retrospect in their hiding place in a country house outside Lisbon, and the investigations, which increasingly uncover the events, up to the clarification of the connections and finally the actual murder.

reception

The film gained some attention with its high-profile cast, especially by Raul Solnado , who is very popular in Portugal as a comedian, in the role of the disaffected, profound inspector. In addition, the novel by José Cardoso Pires was awarded in the same year by the Portuguese writers' association APE ( Associação Portuguesa de Escritores ). The critics praised the film, especially for the achievements of the leading actors, for the photography and the editing, but also for the successful portrayal of a country that was inhibited by the dictatorship and subsequently incapable of reacting and ashamed.

The film was released on March 12, 1987 in Portugal. a. shown on the second channel of the public television broadcaster RTP in Portugal.

It was released on DVD in Portugal in 2013.
